Set in the foothills of the Himalayas this sixty-bed hospital provides care to rural families who suffer from diseases common in the West such as diabetes as well as from TB typhoid burns etc. Large numbers of ill children and women with obstetrical emergencies and complications are also attended to. The hospital is in a small village with a population of several thousand located three hours north of the capital city and on an ancient silk route. The area is predominantly agrarian and mountainous with a quite warm summer weather and occasional snow in the winter.The hospital has sixty beds divided into male female obstetric wards a dozen private rooms and 15-bed nursery. Two operating rooms are in use. Several hundred patients are seen each day in outpatient clinics. The hospital was started in 1956 at its present location.
A lab technologist/trainer is desired for helping to upgrade present lab facilities training lab students and upgrading local lab technicians. Laboratory technologist certification from an accredited program in the country of origin is essential. Local language acquisition would also be a must.
Long- and short-term opportunities are available for both males and females. Volunteers should be professionally qualified. In this challenging environment it is helpful to have a hardy personality and a good sense of humor.
